DESCRIPTION:In response to the urgency of the climate emergency\, biomass and energy crops are becoming an important part of the portfolio of negative emissions technologies\, needed for meeting net zero targets. As a result\, the size of the Biomass and Energy Crop community has significantly expanded in recent years. For example\, in the UK this has been through the Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme\, the Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrator Programme\, the Supergen Bioenergy Hub and the AI for Net Zero Programme. \nOur objective is to bring together researchers from these communities in the UK along with researchers involved in similar international programmes\, and importantly industrialists and policymakers\, to exchange ideas and foster closer collaboration\, and to thereby ensure that Biomass and Energy Crops can fulfill their potential for people and planet. \nThe conference provides an ideal forum for researchers\, agricultural advisors\, bioenergy industry representatives\, policy makers and research funders\, NGO’s and environmental organisations to meet and discuss the state of the art in Biomass and Energy Crops\, and how these crops can be optimised and sustainably scaled up. \nThis event includes standard talks but also the opportunity to visit energy crop experiments and demonstrations at IBERS including one of the Biomass Connect Hub site demonstrating different energy crops and varieties.

SUMMARY:IPC 27th Session: Poplars and other fast-growing trees for Cimate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:In a world grappling with urgent challenges\, the 27th Session of the International Commission on Poplars and Other Fast-Growing Trees Sustaining People and the Environment (IPC27) will bring together experts under the theme\, “Poplars and Other Fast-Growing Trees for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation – Pathways to Climate Resilience and Carbon Neutral Societies.” IPC27 highlights the pivotal role of fast-growing trees in fostering sustainability amidst evolving environmental landscapes. \nFast-growing trees (FGT)\, trees with a mean annual increment (MAI) of at least 10m3 ha-1\, are part of large\, globalized value chains as much as they matter to smallholders and family farmers for their livelihoods\, and for the conservation and restoration of ecosystems. Planted forests\, accounting for 46 percent of global industrial roundwood demand in 2020\, will continue to grow in importance for sustainable wood production and are an important pillar of the bioeconomy. Advancing knowledge and policy on management of FGT is critical for upscale their use for restoration of ecosystems\, land management\, and increased supply of wood fibre. \nTaking place in Bordeaux on October 22-25\, 2024\, IPC27 marks the first in-person session since the approval of its new strategy. The session will unveil the outcomes of the new Working Parties and convene experts on a range of aspects related to management of fast-growing species. A study trip will take place prior to the session on October 17-20\, 2024\, and Italy will host a post-study trip on October 27-29\, 2024. The IPC Executive Committee will hold its 53rd meeting on October 21st\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Plan Bs – How to turn it around when something goes wrong \nOur popular webinar series is back for Season 3 and hits the ground running! \nWhen you are managing a perennial biomass crop with a 20 year+ lifetime\, it is unlikely that it will all be plain sailing. There’s a lot that can go wrong: Weeds\, rabbits\, deer\, pests\, diseases\, gappy crops\, floods\, droughts\, changes in legislation\, schemes and markets are all possible things that growers will have to face at one point or another. This webinar will provide some possible options to meet these challenges and get the most out of your crop. Any grower who’s got a problem should tune in and ask the expert panel of “agony aunts” for advice. \nThe webinar will focus mainly on Short Rotation Coppice willow and Miscanthus crops but many of the issues addressed will be familiar to any perennial biomass crop. Our very knowledgeable panel (Will Macalpine of Rothamsted Research and Chris Ashman of Aberystwyth University) have dealt with most of these issues over the years so have first hand experience of how to find a solution whenever reality throws a curveball. \n \nOur Speakers will be William Macalpine\, plant breeder at Rothamsted Research and Chris Ashman\, Post-doctoral research associate at Aberystwyth University. \nSpeakers:\nWilliam Macalpine: Rothamsted Research \nWill Macalpine \nWilliam is a willow breeder at Rothamsted Research. He has over 21 years’ experience in willow breeding\, perennial energy crop agronomy and in making phenotypic and physiological measurements. He has performed over 700 crosses\, carried out research to overcome crossing barriers\, produced mapping populations and elite SRC willow varieties. He has planned\, planted and managed around 100 perennial energy crop field trials. William has an in-depth knowledge of the UK National Willow Collection\, a unique Salix germplasm resource\, which is located at Rothamsted Research. \nChris Ashman: Aberystwyth University \nPost-doctoral research associate at IBERS and Demonstrator Hub manager at the Biomass Connect Aberystwyth site. \nChris Ashman \n  \n\n				Register Here
