November 2025 – Demonstrator Hub Updates
November brought a clear shift into winter across the Biomass Connect sites, with widespread senescence observed in most crops. Miscanthus stands are now largely brown, though Athena generally remained greener and showed more flowering than giganteus. Willow plots have dropped most leaves, with only a few varieties such as ‘Endurance’ retaining foliage. Sida is fully senesced, leaving bare stalks, while Reed Canary Grass and Switchgrass have also entered dormancy.
Storm events during the month (including Storm Claudia) caused localised wind damage, particularly to taller crops and previously weakened trees, though most sites reported minimal long-term impact. Pest pressures remained low overall, though hare and badger activity was noted at some hubs. Phenotyping of Miscanthus and woody crops continued at several sites, and preparations for winter maintenance and early spring actions are underway.

Site Maintenance
Maintenance activities during November focused on preparing sites for winter and supporting ongoing phenotyping work. Grass aisles were topped earlier in the season and remain short, though wet conditions have limited further mowing at most hubs. Perimeter mowing and spot spraying were carried out where possible, with Boghall completing glyphosate applications on Reed Canary Grass and Switchgrass plots on November 24th. Auchincruive and Boghall scheduled additional tidy-up work for early December, including rogueing weeds and clearing storm debris ahead of spring reseeding plans.
Fencing remained largely intact across the network, though repairs and adjustments were made at wind-exposed sites. Boghall continued to reinforce panels and guy ropes, while North Wyke reported evidence of badger activity within plots. Electric fencing at Cockle Park was monitored regularly, and glyphosate was applied around fence lines to maintain clear boundaries.
Wet weather created challenging ground conditions at several hubs, delaying some planned herbicide applications and limiting access for machinery. Despite this, most sites successfully completed mowing and strimming in interrows, leaving plots tidy for winter. Biodiversity observations were minimal this month, as senescence has progressed across all crops, though some wildflower remnants persisted in grass aisles earlier in the season.
