Defra Landuse Consultation: Have Your Say on Land Use and Biomass Policy

03 February 2025

The UK government has initiated a comprehensive consultation on England’s land use, aiming to balance the nation’s needs for food production, housing, renewable energy, and environmental conservation. This consultation seeks input from various stakeholders, including those in the biomass sector, to inform the development of a Land Use Framework.

Environment Secretary Steve Reed announced the consultation and emphasised the importance of strategic land useplanning to protect valuable farmland, promote nature restoration, and support infrastructure development. The framework will utilise advanced data to identify high-quality farmland and potential areas for nature recovery, discouraging development in the areas marked as best for farming and nature

For biomass growers and the broader biomass industry, this consultation presents a significant opportunity to influence policies that directly affect land allocation for energy crops and related infrastructure. The framework aims to balance various land demands, including renewable energy production, which encompasses biomass. Engaging in this consultation allows stakeholders to advocate for the recognition of biomass as a key component in achieving the UK’s renewable energy and climate goals.

The consultation is open until April 25th, 2025, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate by providing feedback on how land can be utilised to meet multiple objectives, including sustainable energy production. This could be a pivotal moment for the biomass sector to ensure that its interests are considered in the national strategy for land use.
