Inter-row spraying has been the main activity at the SRUC Auchincruive Demonstrator Hub in Ayrshire this May. The plots are looking good.


Crop Diaries

  • The SRF Alder trees are looking leafy and healthy


Black Locust

  • The SRF black locust ‘Turbo’ are huge, leafy and very spikey!
  • The SRF black locust ‘Turbo Obelisk’ that was replanted on 17/04/2024 shows no signs of emergence yet. They will need inter-row mowing and spraying soon.


  • There was some evidence of insect damage on the SRF Eucalyptus in April, but we didn’t see the actual pests. There has been no further signs during May.
  • Inter-row mowing is planned to be carried out ASAP.


  • The SRF poplar that was gapped up on 17/04/2024 can’t be seen yet but we are keeping an eye on them. The other trees are tall and look healthy.
  • The SRC poplar that was gapped up on 17/04/2024 are growing healthily.


  • The 0.5 ha Miscanthus giganteus is growing very well. There are lots of stems on each rhizome and no signs of rabbit/hare grazing.
  • The 0.5 ha Miscanthus Athena was planted on 16th May 2024. There were no signs of shoots by the end of the month.


  • The 0.5 ha SRC willow is looking very green and lush and is now in full leaf.
  • Inter-row spraying was carried out on 9th May.
  • There is some insect damage on the outer plants but none further into the plot.


Reed Canary Grass

  • The reed canary grass plot is due to be planted ASAP.


  • The switchgrass plot is due to be planted ASAP.
